Gail and I enjoy seeing wild birds on our travels as well as at home. Here are some photos we have taken over the years, arranged somewhat chronologically. As of April 2023, this web page shows about 420 species, from North America, Europe, Hawaii, the Galápagos Islands, and the Caribbean. You can jump to the locations of our tropical vacations to the Galápagos Islands in 2007, to the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2010, 2011, January 2012, and November 2012, to El Salvador in 2010, to Hawaiʻi in 2014, to the Puerto Rican island of Vieques in 2015, to Aruba in 2016, to Bonaire in 2017, and back to St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2018 and then Aruba again in 2019. We also traveled to to Germany in 2012 and to our ancestral European countries in 2018. Other birds were seen near home and during our RV trips to the Midwest in 2011 and 2012, to Idaho in 2013, to Washington in 2014 to Utah in 2015, to Oregon in 2016, and back to Utah in 2017 .

The Covid-19 pandemic arrived in March 2020. That terminated our travels to interesting birding locations. During the “lock down”, I did all of my birding locally. My usual locations were at the bird feeders on my deck, around Lake Elkhron, down the Little Patuxent to the Pratt Railroad Bridge, and around the MacGills Common and Atholton neighborhood. Less often I would walk to and along the Middle Patuxent and in the Howard County Conservancy. Occasionally, I would go to the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge and to Centennial Lake.

I’m not a serious photographer. My first camera was a Finepix S700, which I replaced in 2013 with a Nikon Coolpix P520, both point-and-shoot cameras. Then I replaced the Coolpix P520 with a Nikon Coolpix P900 on April 10, 2018.

And I’m not a serious birder - we’ve not travelled any distance for the express purpose of seeing birds, or signed up for birding tours. This web page is more of an illustrated list than an attempt at high-quality nature photography. I am pleased with some of the photographs, but in others the subjects are decidedly blurry. When I’ve obtained better photos, I’ve replaced the older, blurrier ones originally on this page.

GALÁPAGOS - 2007

The Galápagos are a great place to see exotic birds because nearly everything there is exotic in some way or other and because the birds are nearly fearless of people. We went there at the beginning of July 2007. I also photographed a Vermilion Flycatcher, but got a better image in Arizona in 2016.

MARYLAND - 2012

In February 2012 I began practicing photographing birds after sharing the photo of the Torogoz with cousin Brad, and then seeing Hooded Mergansers on a local pond. What follows is a result of my practice. Most of the photos were taken while I was walking for exercise in the neighborhood. I also took a photo of Belted Kingfisher with a fish in its mouth near the Little Patuxent River in March, but it was at a long distance and I got a better photo two years later. Similarly, I got out-of-focus photos of two Piliated Woodpeckers, and later got a better image.

ST. JOHN, US VIRGIN ISLANDS - 2012

In November 2012, Gail and I took a vacation on St. John again. My waterproof camera leaked after the first 1/2 hour so I have very few fish photographs, but I did get a nice assortment of new bird photos.

MARYLAND - 2012-2013

Back home again, I resumed taking photographs during my walks for exercise. In addition, on Dec. 3, we hung a bird feeder from our deck. That increased the traffic of birds in our backyard, and allowed me to get improved photos of some species and photos of some species I had not gotten before.

IDAHO AND AND PLACES ALONG THE WAY - 2013

During summer of 2013 we travelled to Idaho with our Moving House to volunteer at the Bruneau Dunes State Park. Along the way, we visited the Little Big Horn National Battleground and Yellowstone National Park. On the way home, we visited Glacier National Park and Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

I replaced my Finepix S700 camera with a Nikon Coolpix P520 about halfway through our summer. The old camera wasn't giving the photos I wanted, especially at longer distances from the subject.

We did not see any owls, but did see an Eastern Meadowlark and a Rough-Legged Hawk. On another guided bird hunt, David Cummings took me to western Howard County to a site where American Woodcocks had been seen. In mid April, we took a two night camping trip to Point Lookout, where the Potomac River flows into the Chesapeake Bay, and saw a few birds there.

I would like to get photographs of other birds I have seen, such as California Condors, Mountain Quail, Bobwhite Quail, Juniper Titmouses, Roadrunners, etc. If I am lucky, someday I may be able to add these birds to my page. Some of the photographs I do have are of poor quality and I hope to improve upon them, again someday.

In addition, I have many photos of birds that I have not been able to identify. As new resources become available, I will try to add them to this page.
