Albert Holm exiting the 15th century castle on the hill top at ESA’s Villafranca Satellite Tracking Station (VILSPA). The International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite was controlled from VILSPA for 8 hours daily. IUE Staff from Goddard Space Flight Center visited VILSPA every fall for a 3-Agency Meeting to coordinate operational and data processing issues and improvements.

The castle was damaged during fighting during Spain’s civil war. When the tracking station was established, it was necessary to search for unexploded ordinance.
